he had a better eye, he had been watching this much longer than us. but then we started to see the glow. and then the orb of the moon rose into this narrow gap between two twin towers looking north into the rocky mountains. and as that happened, i turned around and as the south -- and i see out of the rocky mountains, i could see a gap where the piedro river flows south and through that gap i could see the desert of northern new mexico and just over the horizon, just about 120 miles away, is chaco canyon, the largest anastazi site in the southwest, just over the horizon. and in between these towers and chaco canyon there are fire signal stations up on top of buttes. every fire signal station is in view of two other signal stations. each of those, four, on and on and on so that a fire would be lit at one spot and everybody would know, you could send messages for hundreds of miles. you could send messages over mountain ranges. there are fire signals all over the four corners, rows and fire signals. i talked to the guy who first discovered these signals

the guy who dropped us off has the proclivity for picking up dangerous animals. i don't recommend it. it was kind of a terrifying experience to have somebody pick up a rattlesnake and go look at it, look at it, and put it right in your face and you are going, no, no, no thanks especially when he was the one driving around and leaving you out there to walk barefoot across the sand. out there where at times you are carrying 100 pounds of water, where you are carrying water in your hands, you are carrying water on your back, everything is about waterity there. you bury your water, you pick up your water, you strap it to your body. i remember on one of the trips carrying all this weight on my back and not sure why i had all this weight on my back. it was making me so clumsy, it was dragging me around and i started trying to unclip it and unbuckle all this stuff that i was carrying out on the dunes so i could get rid of it finally until i realized, wow, you have really put a lot of buckles on this. you didn't want this stuff off you. it's water. don't drop your water.

and i want to welcome those from the bay area to join us as well. oftentimes we can learn from each other what are the better practices and what this coordination means in this day and age. it isn't just talking through but identifying the gaps that exist. and for our youth those gaps could be literally life dependent. and whether it's mental services. whether it's education. whether it's getting a referral to a job. or counseling. whether it's just those two days getting out of either incarceration or something to do with our criminal justice system. we have to pay more attention to the whole level of existence. and i want to thank all of the agency heads for coming here together. this is my understanding, the first time we have asked everybody to come together and to share what you are doing. as good as they might be, as great as they might be. that we still have gaps. and i would be the first to admit it in our city. while we are probably exhibiting of the most successful things we are doing. whether it's 5,000 more summer jobs. we will do more o

some groups have not wanted to work with us. some groups are bigger than us. we might be stealing their intellectual property. we do not feel that way. we have openly shared the best practices. i think that having those tools is one part. having good people behind it is another. from year to year thinking through how of the event will sustain itself is important. frankly, i think that some of those events moved away because there were opportunities better than what san francisco was offering. we can talk to how -- talk about how to award events that are doing well. financially, etc. we should try to look at ways to reduce the costs. >> can i jump in? i did not mention that i was a deejay, because that is not newsworthy, but i am part of the team that puts that on. to clarify, we moved to oakland last year because we really did not feel welcome in san francisco. the hurdles put in front of us to do our event were so extensive, it became impossible to produce a successful the event. sadly, that happened again this year. hopefully we can come back next year. than

so these are the controller's news recommendations, they have asked us to continue assessing how we use the park scores, to evaluate the consistency of our parks scoring methods for the larger parks like golden gate park. so continue to retrain our evaluators to account for excused absences in our measurements of when staff are at parks and to strategically plan for improvements for those districts that are lagging behind. we have done that already this year and taken some initiative to jump on these things. we're in close collaboration with the controller's office. this is an example:we have displayed on the website for a number of years the number of times or the percentage of times that we can find park employees at a park, according to the posted schedule. we thought that number was lower than we wanted and adjustments naturally employees go on leave and have vacations and hillsboroughs and sick-leave and we never accounted for that amount. so we adjusted those numbers and that is in the right-hand column, it brought the numbers back into the column. it's hard for an evaluator to ap
